DH8A, vicinity Svolvær, Norway, 2022

Summary

On 22 December 2022, a De Havilland DHC8-100 came within less than 300 feet of terrain on final approach to Svolvær in clouds as its crew responded to an unexpected but valid EGPWS warning of terrain proximity. The go-around was completed, and the crew decided to return to the departure airport Bodø, which was accomplished without further event. An incorrect altimeter setting had resulted in the approach being flown 700 feet below the required profile.

Description

On 22 December 2022, a De Havilland DHC8-100 (LN-WIP) operated by Widerøe on a scheduled domestic passenger flight from Bodø to Svolvær as WF834 was making a nonprecision approach at destination in night instrument meteorological conditions (IMC) when an EGPWS ‘TOO LOW TERRAIN’ warning occurred after the automated 500 feet radio height callout. A go-around was initiated, and the first officer saw that the altimeters were still set to 1013 hPa, rather than the correct local altimeter setting. The crew decided not to make a second approach and returned to Bodø, where they secured the flight recorders and advised the company that they were terminating their flight duty.
