On 27 October 2024, an Airbus A330-300 en-route from Cape Town to Johannesburg flew into severe clear air turbulence which had not been anticipated and the First Officer’s response to the unstable flight which followed was completely contrary to the prescribed Flight Crew Training Manual procedure without any comment from or intervention by the Captain. The maximum permitted airspeed was exceeded and four of the unsecured cabin crew were injured, one seriously, whilst performing cabin service. The Investigation Report did not review the flight crew’s pre-flight review of forecast weather en-route or document the nature of the crew injuries.
