On 28 May 2023, an Airbus A350-900 climbing to cruise altitude after departing Kansai began experiencing radar faults and indicated air speed fluctuations and it was decided to declare an emergency and return. During the descent, the radome collapsed inwards on itself causing significant airflow disturbance. Both the autopilot and the autothrust were disconnected and an overweight landing was subsequently made. The cause of the observed radome collapse was found to have been undetected damage to the inner wall of the composite structure during maintenance with the origin of this damage likely to have been a bird strike.
