On 6 September 2024, a Boeing 787-9 descending towards its destination, Guangzhou, encountered some severe turbulence which had not been foreseen over a period of approximately five seconds shortly after passing 19,000 feet. The seat belt signs were still off and 10 cabin crew and one passenger were injured, two of these injuries being serious ones. The likely origin of the turbulence was found to have been an actively developing cell close to but behind the aircraft and therefore not visible on forward-looking aircraft weather radar. The aircraft operator subsequently modified their relevant procedures on seat belt use.
